- Born: Neta-Lee Hershlag
Natalie Portman is an Israeli-born American actress, director, producer and a recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. Her fans know that she started her acting career when she was only 12 years old, and that her initial name was Neta-Lee Hershlag.
Born in Israel, the actress was given a traditional Hebrew name, but her family emigrated to the United States in 1984 and they changed the Hershlag surname to Portman, the actress’s maternal grandmother’s maiden name. And of course, Neta-Lee became Natalie.
