Martin Luther King Jr. had just been assassinated
In April 1968—the day after giving a sermon in support of Memphis protesters—Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed on the balcony outside his hotel room. The assassination sparked national outrage and protests across the country, and a manhunt ending in London with the capture of James Earl Ray. Today, Dr. King’s legacy is observed with a national holiday Jan. 21.
