There had never been a woman on the U.S. Supreme Court
While the U.S. Supreme Court was implemented in 1789, it never saw a female judge until 1981. In September of that year, Sandra Day O’Connor was confirmed after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. She served on the court until her retirement in 2006. Three other women have served in addition to O’Connor: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor.
