Happy retirees don’t have a mortgage (or are about to pay it off)
It’s pretty easy to figure out why this is a reason of happiness. Knowing that you don’t owe anyone anything makes you feel more free and less stressed. Also, you get a plus of comfort and security from the fact that you get freedom in spending your income any how you want.
