Yellowstone National Park, Montana
Visitor numbers have increased by 40% since 2008, and now there are 4.25 million visitors to Yellowstone each year, Responsible Travel says.
“With Yellowstone’s rising visitor numbers come rising problems — an increasing number of people think it’s a good idea to stray from the marked trails, and there are more incidents involving wildlife,” Francis says.
“Bison have been known to stampede tourists, while tourists themselves carve their names into rocks and throw litter into vent holes. There’s also worsening traffic as cars stop to see the animals, and very little parking in high summer.”
