5. Dr. Bronner

Emanuel Heilbronner, known as Dr. Bronner, is the man behind the great line of Castile soaps that had rambling religious messages on the label. He was born on February 1st, 1908, into a family of  German soap makers. In 1929, he left Germany and emigrated to the United States of America, where he changed his name to “Bronner”, in order to avoid the Nazi association with the first part of his name, “Heil”.

He founded his own company in the late 1940s and it is best known for its labels that have a lot of text on them and also for the variety of uses for a single product, such as one soap being soap, insecticide, shampoo, toiler scrubber, and toothpaste as well.

In 2017, the company’s annual income was over $100 million and it continues to be run by members of the Bronner’s. Even though he has the distinction “Dr.” before his brand name, he was never a doctor. However, according to the brand’s official site, it is believed that he had a university degree in chemistry, but there are no records to show proof that he ever attended university.

6. Doc Holliday

John Henry Holliday, known as Doc Holliday, received this nickname due to his short career as a dentist. In 1872, he graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dentistry. Soon after, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis (a disease his mother had as well) and was advised by many doctors to move West. It was believed that a dryer climate could be helpful for treating this disease.

Shortly after moving, he opened a practice in Dallas, but he realized that dry air isn’t actually a cure for tuberculosis. His numerous coughing spells forced him to let dentistry go.

Turns out that he liked gambling as well because he demonstrated that he is a natural genius when it comes to playing poker. He became a professional gambler and managed to support himself.

7. Doc Severinsen

Carl Hilding Severinsen was born on July 7th, 1927 in Arlington, Oregon. He received the nickname “Doc” due to the fact that his father was the only dentist in Arlington.

Back in the day, when the Tonight Show’s host was Johnny Carson, his band’s leader was Carl Steverson, known simply as “Doc” Stevenson. Hilding’s dad used to play violin and tried to convince his son to do the same, but he chose to play the trombone.

A”doctor” who was a musician. As it turned out, it worked well for him. After five years of singing, he won several honors at Music Educator’s National Contest.
