Winter is just around the corner, but we have to prepare our immune system to deal with these seasonal illnesses, such as the common cold, flu or other viruses. In any case, it’s important to do a little research to know exactly what to expect when it comes to diseases that are most common in winter.

So, this is the time when people start making holiday plans, but it is important to pay more attention to your body’s needs and what we need to do to be healthy as well. According to health experts, in general, people are more likely to get sick during the winter months because they tend to spend more time indoors and viruses live longer in colder temperatures.

According to Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at the Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, “the winter season is the time of year when we have more respiratory infections. We spend more time in enclosed spaces, close to each other so that we have more prolonged face-to-face contact.”

“When we transmit viruses from one person to another, we’re usually 3 feet [from] each other — the so called ‘breathing zone. When we’re in a time of low humidity such as we have in the winter time, it appears that that little bit of moisture that surrounds the virus evaporates, so the virus remains in the air for a sufficiently prolonged time so that the person who is sufficiently close to me can breathe it in,” Schaffner added.
