They can mislead you into saying “yes”
Scammers can make you say “yes” by asking you “can you hear me?” before the conversation starts and then they will use it against you to claim that you agreed to pay for something or give them any personal information.
“By getting you to answer ‘yes’ to that one question at the very beginning of the call — as opposed to somewhere in the middle of the conversation, where dubbing would be more obvious — scammers can record your affirmative answer,” says Eva Velasquez, CEO and president of Identity Theft Resource Center.
Instead of saying ‘yes’, you can simply say “I can hear you” and try to say this phrase even if the call is from someone you know. Don’t forget that it’s better to be safe than sorry.
