He was born in Manhattan in New York City to painters Virginia Admiral and Robert De Niro Sr. His parents divorced when he was two years old after his father announced his orientation. Even though he said that he was gay, his father still took care of him and remained close to him during his childhood. Robert De Niro Sr. had a relationship with poet Robert Duncan. De Niro Jr. even made a documentary about his father’s life.
