The country was in a lot less debt
The national debt for the United States in June 1968 was just under $350 billion (the equivalent of more than $2 trillion in 2017). In the same month in 2018, the U.S. Department of the Treasury reported that the national debt had surpassed $21 trillion (the equivalent of $2 trillion in 1968).
