Rotisserie Chicken

Costco price: $4.99 per whole chicken

Boston Market price: $9.99 per half chicken, plus two sides

Cooked rotisserie chicken makes for a quick and easy hot dinner in a pinch, but there’s a price to pay for the convenience — unless you’re shopping at Costco. Members can pick up a fully-cooked, hot and ready-to-serve chicken for just $4.99. Compare that price to Boston Market, where you can get just half a chicken with two sides for twice the price.

Costco sells about 80 million rotisserie chickens each year, which is how the company can afford to “take a hit” on its bottom line, Fortune reported. In 2013, Costco’s chief operating officer Richard Galanti told The Seattle Times that while competitors raised their chicken prices from $4.99 to $5.99,

Costco chose to lose $30 to $40 million a year in gross margin to keep their store price $4.99, sticking with the Costco mission to keep prices low.

Nutella

Costco price: 21 cents an ounce

Walmart price: 22 cents an ounce

This Italian chocolate-hazelnut spread was born out of a chocolate scarcity during World War II and is now available for consumption in 160 countries. In fact, Nutella has become so popular, the company uses about one-quarter of the world’s hazelnut production each year just to meet demand.

The Nutella craze has hit the U.S. so hard that Columbia University even came under fire in 2013 for spending over $5,000 a week for students who were eating 100 pounds of it a day.

Thank goodness Costco started carrying this sweet treat at a great price. The retailer sells two giant 33.5-ounce jars of Nutella for just $13.99 — about 21 cents an ounce. Compare that price to Walmart, where Nutella is about 22 cents an ounce, and Amazon, which sells a comparable bundle for 33 cents an ounce.

  1. THESE HOT DOGS ARE WONDERFUL… AND ALL THE CONDIMENTS TO PUT ON THEM.
I LOVE COSTCO HOT DOGS AND A DRINK TO GO WITH THEM.

  2. We used to be members of Costco, but we are older now and do not need to always have such large amounts of an item. Wondering if you have a way we can shop at Costco now and then. By the way…we love your rotisserie chicken?

    1. Hi Carol, if you know someone that has a card, give them money to buy you a Costco gift card and you can get in and buy that dollar amount with your gift card.
      I hope that helps!
      Pat

  3. I would love to come back to Costco. I have not renewed my card for a long time. I am 84 and live by myself and I don’t feel the cost of joining is worth it. I can’t use the large sizes, There are things I can use and feel the seniors 80 plus could have a break on the card cost.
