He was the only licensed bartender to rise to the position of chief executive. Abraham Lincoln launched a business in New Salem, Illinois that functioned as both a drinking and a store establishment. With his associate – Berry, they received a liquor license in 1833 and began selling whiskey, brandy and wine. Later, Abraham became the postmaster of New Salem.
