The annexation of Crimea
Putin says that he was invited into Ukraine by ousted president Viktor Yanukovich to help protect the country from unrest. At first, he denied that a group of militants that had taken over the Supreme Council of Crimea was Russian. But in 2015, it came out that before the arrival of these militants, Putin held a meeting in which he expressed his wish to return Crimea to Russia.
