Stress can lead to several skin problems

Well, it is no secret that stress can lead to several skin issues, especially acne. “It is very common for people to experience breakouts when stressed,” said dermatologist Marisa Garshick. “Your body releases stress hormones including cortisol, which may increase the skin’s oil production, making you prone to breakouts.”

Our skin is the largest organ in our body and is usually negatively affected by stress. When you are stressed, you will probably notice some breakouts and we have to admit that it could be really dramatic for young people. Why? Because stress can increase the level of cortisol and this hormone makes your glands to produce more oil. Of course, oily skin can lead to acne or other skin issues. For instance, stress can exacerbate some skin problems, such as psoriasis, rosacea or eczema.

“Stress stimulates the brain to produce a specific set of hormones that prepare the body for a stressful environment. As a side effect, these hormones rev up activity of sebaceous glands in the skin, leading to higher than normal levels of oil, blockages in the pores and acne breakouts,” said Dr. Joshua Zeichner, the director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City,

Moreover, you have to pay attention to your stressors and try to eliminate them, because stress can develop some skin problems and those skin issues can accentuate your stress, this is especially for people who feel so bad about how their skin looks. “To the skin, stress falls into one of two categories: acute or chronic. The more detrimental form of stress for the skin is the chronic kind of stress. The longer you endure stress, the more it takes a toll on your skin,” said Dr. Whitney Bowe, a New York City-based dermatologist and the author of The Beauty of Dirty Skin.

Moreover, stress can dry your skin, so it is important to stay hydrated all day long. “If your body thinks it’s under some sort of stress, it’s trying to cool itself down. If you’re not replenishing your body with water, you’re going to dry out,” said Dr. Bowe.
