Pay attention to creosote build-up

When wood burns, combustion byproducts, such as gases, smoke, or water vapor, are produced and expelled through the chimney. So, when these substances exist through your chimney they create condensation. Condensation usually creates a build-up of flammable creosote, which can lead to chimney fires as well.

Nevertheless, if you want to prevent this havoc, you should hire an expert to inspect your chimney and fireplace at least once a year.
Check your sump pump often
You should check your sump pump often if you want to prevent damage and a flooded basement. “Checking connections, cleaning the pump and vents, and making sure the float switch is not restricted can be done by the homeowner,” says Boudreau. “A battery backup pump is also an inexpensive way to prevent failure,” says Boudreau.
Of course, sump pumps are essential for your house safety and you should install one in your basement, but just like any other device, it may stop working and it can lead to severe complications. If you don’t fix the problem as soon as possible, that water can turn your basement into a swimming pool. What should you do? Well, a regular checkup can save your basement and sump pump. You can also test it by pouring water into the sump pit and see if it’s working properly. However, you can find a qualified plumber to check it for you.
