Video Chat (1927)

You might peg the concept of video chat to pioneering science-fiction films like 2001: A Space Odyssey or 1982’s Blade Runner, but the idea dates farther back than that. In Fritz Lang’s 1927 German expressionist epic, Metropolis, Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel) makes use of video-calling to issue orders to his subordinates.

It’s not quite as hands-free as the tech of today, though; he still has to make use of a phone receiver. Oh, and he has to fiddle with it a bit to get good picture clarity which, come to think of it, is much like office video conferencing today!
