World War II (1933)

It seems Wells could either see into the future, or travel through time. His 1933 future history, The Shape of Things to Come, predicted a second world war, starting in January 1940. (The real one, you’ll recall, started in September 1939).

In Wells’ imagination, World War II began because Franklin D. Roosevelt failed to pass the New Deal, causing economic failure to beset the globe. Many of the predictions in the book are eerily prescient, including detailed accounts of air raids in Berlin.
