Smart Homes (1904)
No one single person predicted the rise of smart homes, since smart homes themselves are a collective of ideas. But if you had to trace it to a sole piece of science fiction, it would be “The Machine Stops,” a 1904 short story by E.M. Forster. In it, Forster details a world where every home is underground, but connected through a vast, global information system.
