Change in immigrant population since 2010: +17.6%

Current immigrant population: 72,000

In the past few years the foreign-born population grew nearly 18%. Now immigrants make up 2,4% of the Mississippi’s total population. According to the MPI, more than a third are from Mexico while China, Vietnam and India are also common countries of origin. In Tennessee live 25,000 undocumented immigrants, according to Pew Hispanic.

 

4. Alaska

Change in immigrant population since 2010: +18.7%

Current immigrant population: 59,000

In 2015, Alaska’s immigrant population was 59,000 and this was a 19% increase from 2010. Under 30% immigrants were from the Philippines and you probably know that the Philippines has a long history of sending immigrants. The rest come from Korea, Mexico and Canada.

 

In the largest city in Alaska, Anchorage, immigrants make up a minority of workforce in several industries. According to the Partnership for New American Economy, 19% of people working in the accommodation and recreation industry are foreign-born.
