Every year millions of Americans tune in to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, but did you know that the parade has European origins?

In 1924, the store’s immigrant employees decided to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season like they would have in their European homelands—with a parade with knights, jugglers and clowns. The balloons weren’t introduced until 1927.
