The contract of the show with Fox allows them to write any kind of script without any intervention from the channel. This is extremely rare, but the contract was made while Fox was still pretty unpopular and it remained that way. As you can see in this photo, The Simpsons writers got pretty creative in all sorts of ways thanks to their freedom!
