Ziprasidone and small meals

Ziprasidone is generally used to treat certain mental disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is good for decreasing hallucinations and agitation, as well as making patients feel more positive and active during the day. The most common side effects include dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness and weight gain.

According to statistics, in 2017, it was one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States, with more than one million prescriptions.

Nevertheless, according to National Alliance on Mental Illness, this type of drug should be taken with a meal of at least 500 calories. A 2009 study done by Gandelman Kuan and colleagues on the impact of calories and fat content of meals on oral ziprasidone absorption, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, found that eating a substantial snack or meal makes the ziprasidone absorption more efficient.
