Warfarin and kale

Warfarin (sold under the brand names Jantoven and Coumadin) is a drug used as an anticoagulant – it is also known as ‘blood thinners’ used to treat blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Warfarin is also used by people who are at higher risk of developing a stroke.

However, what many people don’t know about this anticoagulant is that it can interfere with vitamin K, which means that vitamin K will neutralize the effects of warfarin in your body. This type of vitamin can be found in vegetables, such as kale and broccoli.

According to Mitchell Howard, PharmD, clinical assistant professor at the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, when the warfarin that you are taking becomes ineffective, then your risk of a blood clot (or even a stroke) increases. Of course, you don’t have to avoid vitamin K at all costs, but you need to stick to a balanced and diversified diet.

Nevertheless, you should contact your doctor for more information and he (or she) will adjust your dose and prescribe a healthy diet. It’s important to ask for their opinion because there are some deficiencies that can cause other severe complications.
