Of course, you don’t need us to tell you how important and healthy fruits and vegetables are for a person’s daily diet, right? But unfortunately, according to some studies, Americans don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Most of them are discarded before being consumed because fresh foods are more likely to spoil.Â
However, to reduce food waste and eat healthier foods, medical experts recommend choosing frozen fruits and vegetables. “Purchasing frozen fruit can help reduce food waste because it can be stored and eaten at our convenience, whereas fresh fruit has a shorter window of time where it must be eaten before it spoils,” explained The United Nations.Â
“While I’m a big fan of fresh produce, I’m also serious about helping people fit in at least five servings of fruits and veggies per day every day. I’ve found that when my clients keep their freezers stocked with frozen produce, they’re much more likely to hit that mark,” said nutritionist Cynthia Sass.
“Some nutrients may be less available when frozen while others, like vitamin C, vitamin E, and riboflavin, may be more available when frozen,” added Megan Meyer, PhD, director of science communication at the International Food Information Council.
