You have to be honest with yourself

The first rule is to always be honest with yourself and accept your feelings no matter what! You worsen your situation if you criticize and blame yourself. You shouldn’t interiorize your feelings just because you feel ashamed that others will judge or laugh at your situation.

“Most of the suffering we experience when feeling lonely is a product of the shame and anxiety we create through judging and abandoning ourselves,” said New York City-based therapist and executive coach, Megan Bruneau. “We believe we’re failing or broken because we feel lonely or we’re lonely because we’re unlovable.”

You should be understanding and gentle with yourself because if you accept your feelings, healing comes naturally. Bruneau suggests you say to yourself that: “It’s understandable you’re feeling lonely right now; you’re a human who, like other humans, yearns for connection in our disconnected world.”

Unfortunately, many people tend not to express their feelings in front of others, and this could be really dangerous for their peace of mind and health. “We tend to stigmatize loneliness in the U.S., equating it with being a loner or a loser,” says Kory Floyd, Professor of Communication and Psychology at the University of Arizona. “That stigma encourages us to avoid admitting when we’re lonely. Denying our loneliness only perpetuates it, so before we can recover, we have to be honest — at least with ourselves — about what we are experiencing.”

So, try to be honest with yourself and remember that you don’t have to feel ashamed that you feel lonely. People who really matter will understand and respect you.
