Realize that it is a transient feeling

When you feel lonely, you should remember that you are not alone – there are many people that understand what you actually feel and support you. So, even if there will be many moments in your life when you will feel really lonely (even if you are surrounded by other people), you must be aware that it is a transient feeling that won’t last forever.

“Remember this feeling will pass, is not a sign of pathology, and that there are millions of other ‘loneliness’ out there, sharing this feeling with you right now,” Bruneau said.

You have to find some activities that can keep you entertained and focused, such as writing, reading, exercising, or cooking. You should find out a new hobby if you don’t already have one.

“[When I’m lonely] I remind myself just how pervasive loneliness is and I imagine being connected to ‘all of the lonely people out there’. Sometimes I listen to Eleanor Rigby [by the Beatles] to hammer that point home,” says Bruneau. “Loneliness is a healthy emotion, revealing places we yearn for connection.”
