Blogging (1835)

A 19th-century Russian prince predicting the age of blogging sounds too crazy to be true, right? Well, not only did Vladimir Odoevsky imagine such a thing, the renowned philosopher, composer, and science-fiction writer might have invented it, more than a hundred years before the internet even launched.

In his 1835 novel, titled The Year 4338: Petersburgian Letters, he attempted to predict what the world would look like 2,500 years into the future. Odoevsky wrote that houses would be “connected by means of magnetic telegraphs that allow people who live far from each other to communicate.”

Each house would publish a daily journal or newsletter, providing information about the family’s health, any household news, different thoughts and comments, small inventions, invitations to receptions, etc. and share it with the world. In other words, oversharing with strangers via technology. Yep, sounds like blogging!
