You should know that the most recent burst of solar activity happened in July 2012, when a coronal mass ejection passed through Earth’s orbit and hit the STERO-A space station. To understand better, a coronal mass ejection is the solar ejection of a billion-ton cloud of magnetized plasma that acts as an electromagnetic pulse on Earth’s electronics, making them work harder.
According to Pete Riley, a scientist at Predictive Science there is a 12 percent chance of a major solar storm hitting Earth in the next 10 years – affecting radio, GPS, satellite communications and power grids leading to a major worldwide blackouts.
