After Barack Obama was chosen as the President of The United States of America in 2008, Michelle Obama showed up at a meeting following Election Day in a black-and-red dress. The outfit was created by Narciso Rodriguez, an LGBTQ designer and the child of Cuban immigrants.

The New York Times said about the first lady’s dress that it looked like a “lava lamp”, and people loved the fact that she chose to wear a first-generation designer’s creation.

During her eight years as the first lady, she embraced wearing designs by Rodriguez several times. In addition to that, Michelle Obama chose creations made by Black-owned fashion labels, young female entrepreneurs, and American immigrant designers.

In 2018, when she was on her book tour, Michelle said during an interview that she was aware of the fact that her clothes were making a statement, so she decided to take advantage of it. This is why she had chosen many times to wear outfits created by young and new designers.

“So we decided, why don’t we use this platform to uplift some young new designers who normally wouldn’t get this kind of attention? Because you can change their lives”, as she stated during her interview.

  1. I really liked Jackie’s style during my time fashion was everything. I morn today to see that real fashion has given way to no sense of anything. The worse the fashion look s the better. I liked Michelle Obama for her sense of choice with her personal desires. Michelle was very conscious of the financial make of the country.
