Zora Neale Hurston 

Zora Neale Hurston was an American author, anthropologist and filmmaker who focused her work on racial struggles and published research on HoodooOne of her most popular novels is Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937). Her struggles as an African American woman are reflected in her works.  

Unfortunately, before her death, she had some financial and medical problems, so she had to enter Lucie County Welfare Home. Once there, Hurston suffered a stroke and died of hypertensive heart disease in 1960. Her grave remained unmarked until 1973 when novelist Alice Walker (author of The Color Purpledecided to mark it as hers.
